Jeremiah Poppleton was born in Bexley, Kent. A Silk Spinner by occupation, he enlisted into the Regiment of Artillery at Macclesfield, Chester on 12 June 1806, aged 19 years. He saw his first active service in General Cathcart’s expedition to Copenhagen in 1807. Then in the Peninsula, he was present at the siege of Badajoz, March 1812; the battle of Salamanca, 22 July 1812 and the siege and retreat from Burgos, November 1812. He later served six years at Corfu. He was discharged at Woolwich in March 1834 as a consequence of ‘deafness and chronic catarrh’. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1835.
