Gordon Besford was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, on 28 April 1932 and attested for the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry in 1950. He was serving as company Quartermaster Sergeant at the time of the amalgamation with the the Somerset Light Infantry in 1959, and served with the newly-created Somerset and Cornwall Light Infantry in Borneo. Commissioned Second Lieutenant on 1 April 1966, he was promoted Lieutenant on 1 April 1970, and Captain on 1 April 1972. He saw further service with the Light Infantry in Northern Ireland, and was promoted Acting Major on 23 January 1976, being confirmed in this rank on 30 June 1978. He retired on 31 March 1984.
