William Hanks was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in 1838 and attested for the 46th Regiment of Foot at Gloucester on 8 October 1857. He was discharged on 15 October 1878, after 21 years and 8 days’ service, of which 10 years and 3 months had been spent soldiering in India. This is his sole medallic entitlement.
