Sydney Desmond Baker was born in Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia, on 6 March 1933, and served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, in Korea from 24 July 1953 to 24 July 1954. He subsequently served with the 85 Transport Platoon, Royal Australian Army Service Corps, and died in March 2007.
