Historical Medals, Sheffield Sunday School Union Golden Jubilee, 1862, medals (6), in copper (4), white metal (2, one gilt), bust of James Montgomery left, revs. bible within wreath, all 38mm (Grant III, p.320; cf. DNW 185, 1435) [6]. Gilt medal fine, others very fine and better, two pierced for suspension £60-£80

James Montgomery (1771-1854), writer of hymns and poetry; b Irvine, Ayrshire; moved to Fulbeck, Leeds, then to Glossop road, Sheffield, working with Joseph Gales, publisher of the Sheffield Register, later the Sheffield Iris, of which he was the proprietor from 1794 to 1825; founding member of the Sheffield Sunday School Union in 1812, with the intention of educating working children on Sundays, especially in literacy, and fighting for child labour laws to keep children out of chimneys. Montgomery Hall (now Montgomery Theatre) in the city was named after him
