John Smith was born on 24 July 1875 on the Isles of Scilly. A farmer by occupation, he enlisted into the Natal Police on 6 November 1897, aged 22 years. He listed as his next-of-kin, his father, ‘J. S. Smith, Old Town, Isles of Scilly, England’. Discharged on 3 May 1901 at his own request; he rejoined on 1 November 1901 at his former rank and status. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1917.
