Joseph Helps was born at Westminster, Middlesex, on 5 April 1857, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S.
Fisgard on 27 September 1872. He joined H.M.S. Egeria in May 1875 and served aboard that ship during the operations in the Malay Straits in November and December of that year. Helps achieved Petty Officer status in November 1879 and left the Navy, time expired, as a Chief Petty Officer on 4 April 1885. Sold with copy service record and medal roll entry.
