China 1842 (John Montresor, Lieut. 98th Regiment Foot) fitted with contemporary replacement swivel-ring bar suspension and silver ribbon brooch, this inscribed ‘Chin Kiang Foo-Nankin’, light contact marks, nearly very fine £700-900

John Montresor was gazetted Ensign in the 98th Regiment on 14 December 1838, and was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1842. He served with the 98th in the expedition to the north of China in 1842 and was present in the attack and capture of Chin Kiang Foo, and at the landing before Nankin (Medal). Promoted to Captain in June 1845, he subsequently transferred to the 82nd Regiment and retired by the sale of his commission during 1853. The medal is sold with an old coloured engraving of troops landing at the west gate of ‘Ching Keang Foo’. See also Lot 1198 for his named miniature medal.
