Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson, V.C., Royal Flying Corps

Zeppelin Relic, a small piece of steel mounted on card, this inscribed ‘bit of German Zeppelin which came down in flames at Caffey, 1916’, sold together with a small original photograph of Leefe Robinson in uniform and a portrait postcard detailing the action, good condition (3) £60-80

On the night of 3 September a force of 16 Army and Navy Zeppelins made for England. An army wooden framed Schutte Lanz dirigible was attacked and destroyed by Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson of 39 Squadron, R.F.C., the wreck falling to earth at Cuffley, Hertfordshire. Robinson was awarded the Victoria Cross for this action - the first zeppelin to be shot down in air combat.
