Colour-Sergeant A. Booth, V.C., 80th Regiment

Original Birth Certificate, of Anthony Booth dated 29th April 1846, Basford, Nottingham, together with a cutting of a newspaper obituary, dated 9 December 1899, fold marks and some staining, fairly good condition (2) £60-80

V.C. London Gazette 23 February 1880.

On 12 March 1879 on the Intombi River, South Africa (Zulu War), during an attack by very large number of the enemy, Colour-Sergeant Booth rallied a few men on the south bank of the river and covered the retreat of 50 soldiers and others for a distance of three miles. Had it not been for the coolness displayed by this N.C.O. not one man would have escaped.

Anthony Clarke Booth, born 21 April 1846, son of William Booth, Shoemaker and Sarah Booth, formerly Clarke, of Carvington (?), Basford, Nottinghamshire.
