The mounted group of the miniature dress medals attributed to Lieutenant-Colonel J. P. H. Crowe, V.C., 10th Regiment, late 78th Regiment

Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Petrus Hendrick Crowe was born on 12 January 1826 in Uitenhage, Cape Colony, South Africa. He entered the British Army as an Ensign in the 78th Highlanders in 1846; promoted Lieutenant in 1850 he served in the Persian Campaign of 1856. In the Indian Mutiny he was present at the actions of Futtehpore, Pandoo Nuddee, Cawnpore, Oonao, Buseerutgunge and Boorzeke Chowkee. He was awarded the V.C. for the latter action, when on 12 August 1857, he was the first to enter the entrenched village. In 1858 Crowe was promoted Captain in the 10th Regiment. He received the Brevets of Major in 1859 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1871 and attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1875. He died in Penge, London on 12 April 1876, being buried in West Norwood Cemetery. In 1977 he was re-interred at Uitenhage.
