Donald Henry Pickard was born on 17 November 1888 and was by occupation a Sanitary Inspector. He attested for the 2nd London Sanitary Company, R.A.M.C. (T.F.) on 5 September 1914 and entered France from the S.S.
Benares on 24 December 1914. He served with the B.E.F. until his return to England on 3 January 1917. Attending No.20 Officer Cadet Battalion at Cookham in February 1917, he was discharged to take up a commission in the 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment on 13 June 1917 (London Gazette 20 June 1917). Returning to active service with the 23rd (2nd Football) Battalion Middlesex Regiment, he served on the Western Front from July to November 1917 and on the Italian Front from November 1917-March 1918 for which service he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. He returned to England suffering from Trench Fever during April/May 1918. Sold with copied service papers.
