Henry Ignatius Boyd was born on 7 January 1880. First commissioned in January 1900, he was appointed to the 13th Lancers, Indian Army in April 1901. He served in the operations in Mohmand country during 1908, employed as Orderly Officer to the G.O.C. 3rd Brigade. In April 1907 be was appointed Adjutant of the 13th Lancers and was promoted to Captain in January 1909.
