William Neilson was born in Croftsmichael in the County of Kircudbright on 13 January 1813. Qualifying as a M.D. at St. Andrew’s in 1836, he was appointed an Assistant Surgeon with the Bombay Establishment on 10 March 1838 and served in the First Afghan War at the capture of Ghuznee. He was advanced to Surgeon in March 1851 and Surgeon-Major in January 1860. He died at Mhau on 1 May 1861. Sold with copied service papers.
