Vernon), minor official correction to the recipient’s number on the first, the third with re-riveted (slack) suspension, the Great War trio and L.S. & G.C. with edge bruising and heavily polished, thus fair to fine, the 1939-45 campaign awards cleaned and plated, otherwise generally very fine or better (10) £800-1000

Franklin John James Hoy, who was born in Horsham, Sussex in February 1899, entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard the Devonport training ship Powerful in February 1915. Joining the ship’s company of the cruiser H.M.S. Minotaur in September of the same year, he was advanced to Ordinary Seaman in February 1916 and was present at the battle of Jutland, prior to removing to the gunnery establishment Excellent as an Able Seaman in February 1919. Between the Wars he was advanced to Petty Officer.

Hoy was decorated for his bravery aboard the auxiliary assault ship H.M.S. Glenroy off Mersa Matruh, North Africa on 23 November 1943, when that vessel was hit by a torpedo delivered by an enemy torpedo-bomber, the resultant damage to her engine-room causing her to stop in the water. Taken in tow, she was eventually beached.

He received his D.S.M. at a Buckingham Palace investiture held on 18 May 1943 and died at Portsmouth in December 1956 while employed as a Constable in the Admiralty Constabulary.
