A fine O.B.I. group of four to Sub-Assistant Surgeon 1st Class Ittoo Chawan, Indian Subordinate Medical Department

Order of British India, 2nd Class badge, gold and enamel, neck loop removed but present to allow for mounting on a medal bar, with silver-gilt buckle on ribbon; Indian Title Badge, ‘Rao Sahib’ (Ittoo Chawan, 3rd June 1916); Africa General Service 1902-561 clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (84 1st Cl. Hos. Asst., 103rd Mahta L.I.); Indian Army Meritorious Service Medal, E.VII.R. (84 1st Cl. Hosp. Asstt., I.S.M.D.Bo.), mounted court style as worn, good very fine and better (4) £700-800

Ittoo Chawan was born on 10 September 1861 and entered the Indian Subordinate Medical Department (Bombay) on 5 September 1882. As a 1st Class Hospital Assistant serving with the 103rd Mahratta Light Infantry he was awarded a medal and clasp for the Somaliland Campaign 1902-04. By the Indian Army Order No.4 of January 1905 he was awarded the Indian Army M.S.M. plus an annuity of 25 Rupees, back-dated to April 1904. Awarded the honorific title of ‘Rao Sahib’ in 1916, he was awarded the Order of British India 2nd Class, with the title ‘Bahadur’ on 7 May 1920. He attained the rank of Sub-Assistant Surgeon 1st Class (I.S.M.D. rank equivalent to Subadar-Major) on 1 June 1920. Sold with some copied research.
