Lieutenant-Colonel B. J. G. Woods was the son of Major H. B. Woods, late R.M.L.I. and Annie, daughter of the late Major-General J. Pickard, R.M.L.I. He was educated at Mannamead School, Plymouth. After service in the Natal Mounted Police, 1891-94, he was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant in the Worcestershire Regiment in April 1900 and Lieutenant in January 1901. Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps on 1 May 1901 and Lieutenant on 1 May 1902, he served in the Boer War, in operations in the Cape Colony and Orange Free State, February 1902 and in the Transvaal, February-May 1902. Woods was promoted Captain in February 1905 and Major in October 1914. For his wartime services he was mentioned in despatches and appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order.
