Ernest Matthey was born in Paddington and enlisted at London. Serving in the 1/9th London Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 4 November 1914. He was killed in action at Gommecourt, as part of the ‘Big Push’ on 1 July 1916, aged 26 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Mr and Mrs A. Matthey of 21 Westmoreland Road, Bayswater, London. For his brother’s medals see lot 1129. Sold with copied m.i.c. which shows entitlement to a 1914 Star clasp, and other copied research.
