Three: Captain Douglas Herbert, Royal Navy
Naval General Service 1793-1840, 1 clasp, Syria (Douglas Herbert, Midshipman); Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp, Sebastopol (Dougs. Herbert, Lieut. H.M.S. Inflexible) contemporary engraved naming; St Jean D’Acre 1840, silver, fitted with swivel-ring bar suspension, all fitted with silver ribbon brooches and contained in a contemporary fitted leather carrying case, nearly extremely fine (3) £1200-1400
Douglas Herbert entered the Navy as a Midshipman in December 1829 and served in that position aboard the Edinburgh on the Mediterranean station, where, including the bombardment of St Jean D’Acre, he shared in the operations of 1840 on the coast of Syria, and was officially mentioned for his services (London Gazette 1840, p. 2610). He was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1846 and served in that rank aboard the Inflexible in the Black Sea in 1854-55, including the bombardment of Sebastopol. Promoted to Commander in July 1860, he retired with the rank of Captain on 21 July 1875.
