Alfred August Chapman entered the 48th Regiment as an Ensign on 20 May 1842 and attained the rank of Major in 1855. With the regiment he served in the Crimean War, February-May 1856. Upon his promotion to Lieutenant-Colonel on 17 September 1858, he exchanged to the 2nd Battalion 18th Royal Irish Regiment. He commanded the 18th Regiment in the New Zealand War, 1863-65, and was engaged at Waikato and Wanganui; he was invalided home in June 1865. In September 1866 he retired on Half Pay due to ill health. On 1 April 1873 he was appointed to the command of the Brigade Depot at Richmond, Yorkshire, but was transferred in June 1875 to Warley, which post he vacated on promotion to Major-General in September 1877. He retired with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-General on 1 July 1881. Lieutenant-General Chapman died at his residence at The Rectory, North Petherton, in November 1890, aged 69 years.
