Peter Burke was born in the Parish of Killasar, Westport, Co. Mayo. He enlisted into the 88th Foot, for life, at Dumfries on 22 April 1805, aged 23 years. He had previously served 1 year, 278 days in the 45th Foot. Burke served in the Peninsular War with the 88th Regiment, being discharged on 14 October 1820 as a consequence of ‘being worn out from service and right eye injured’. On 10 January 1821 he enrolled in the 6th Royal Veteran Battalion at Sheerness, Kent, but was discharged on 15 February 1821 because of its disbandment. Clasps confirmed. Sold with copied discharge papers and notes. A regimental medal (Balmer R523b) was awarded to this man.
