John Rollinson was born in Preston, Lancashire. A Weaver by occupation and a former member of the 2nd Lancashire Militia, he attested for a limited period at Hull on 8 April 1809. Serving in Portugal and Spain with the 82nd Foot, he was with them at Barrosa where only two flank companies of the regiment were present. Fortesque wrote of the battle as ‘one of the bloodiest and one of the most creditable to British troops, that is to be found in the history of the Army’. Within three weeks of the successful outcome of the Peninsular War, the 82nd Regiment were despatched to Canada, subsequently taking part in the fighting around Fort Erie. John Rollinson was discharged on 7 April 1816. His name appears on a list of ‘Peninsula’ and ‘Waterloo’ veterans who attended a memorial service to the Duke of Wellington at Preston.
