3428 Private R. Stagpole died, probably from enteric fever, at Darmali, during the Nile Expedition 1898. The medal rolls give his initial as “G” and note that his awards were sent to his father, Mr Dudley Stagpole, V.C., D.C.M., late 57th Foot, who won both the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the Maori Wars in 1863.
