James Downey was born at Kilfinan, Limerick, and enlisted at Bruff on 6 December 1845, aged 19. He sailed from Woolwich to Sydney, Australia, on 18 May 1846, on the Java, and arrived on 15 October. He sailed from Sydney on 8 November and arrived at Auckland on 27 November 1846. He was discharged in New Zealand on 14 September 1865, and is recorded on the 1902 New Zealand campaign Veterans Roll.
