Signature of Adjutant-General Sir John Macdonald (2), ‘John Macdonald, A.G.’, one on a memorandum, 317 x 202mm., dated 1 May 1837, reminding officers of the King’s order against wearing long hair and whiskers; another on a memorandum, 318 x 200mm., dated 31 December 1844, regarding the equiping of ‘lassos’ to every troop of cavalry, a little torn at the edges, both with fold marks

Signature of Lord Fitzroy James Henry Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan (3), one a letter addressed to Major Henry Kean, dated 15 March 1849, 245 x 199mm., transmitting a medal, signed ‘Fitzroy Somerset’; another, a stampmarked slip of paper, 118 x 70mm., dated 15 December 1833, signed ‘Fitzroy’; another, a stamp marked slip of paper, 122 x 78mm., signed, ‘Fitzroy Somerset’, first with fold marks, good condition (5) £90-120

Sir John Macdonald (d.1850), Adjutant-General at Horse Guards; a connection of Flora Macdonald; entered the army in 1795; served in Ireland and Egypt and held important staff appointments during the Peninsular War. Was Deputy Adjutant-General at Horse Guards, 1820-30 and Adjutant-General, 1830-50.

Fitzroy Somerset served in the Peninsular war and at Waterloo with Wellington and succeeded him as commander of the forces in 1852. Commanded the British troops in the Crimean War.
