Sir John Macdonald (d.1850), Adjutant-General at Horse Guards; a connection of Flora Macdonald; entered the army in 1795; served in Ireland and Egypt and held important staff appointments during the Peninsular War. Was Deputy Adjutant-General at Horse Guards, 1820-30 and Adjutant-General, 1830-50.
Fitzroy Somerset served in the Peninsular war and at Waterloo with Wellington and succeeded him as commander of the forces in 1852. Commanded the British troops in the Crimean War.
