Attributed to Major (later Lieutenant-General Sir) Charles Craufurd Fraser, V.C., K.C.B., 11th Hussars. Major Fraser, then serving with the 7th Hussars, won the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny (London Gazette 8 November 1860). The Register of the Victoria Cross states: ‘On 31 December 1858 at the River Raptee, India, Major Fraser volunteered, at great personal risk and under a sharp fire of musketry, to swim to the rescue of a captain and some men who were in imminent danger of being drowned while in pursuit of the rebels. Major Fraser succeeded in this mission, although still partially disabled from a wound received while leading a charge against the enemy some months earlier’.
