‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 9 August 1918, near Vanvillers, in leading a charge against a machine-gun post, which was causing heavy casualties. After capturing the post he rallied a few men and cleared the trench to his flank for several hundred yards. He continued his untiring efforts the next two days and set a fine example to his comrades.’
