A Great War C.B.E. group awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel H. L. FitzPatrick, Commissioner of the British Red Cross and St John Salonika Commission 1916-19

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, C.B.E., Commander’s 1st type neck badge, enamels badly damaged; The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Knight of Grace, breast star, silver and enamels, the reverse with maker’s mark ‘JBC’, together with an Officer’s breast badge, silver and enamels, by ‘AP’, this with badly chipped enamel; 1914-15 Star (H. L. Fitzpatrick, B.R.C.S. & St. J.J.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Lt. Col.); Legion of Honour, Officer, silver-gilt and enamels, some damage to enamels; French Croix de Guerre 1914-18; Serbian Red Cross Society of London, silver medal for service to Serbia during the War (Lt. Col.); France, Ministére de la Marine, medal of honour (Dévouement Épidémie) silver-gilt (M. Fitzpatrick, H.L., Salonique 1918); U.S.A., American National Red Cross Society Medal, silver and enamel, by Tiffany & Co (To Col. Fitzpatrick, for service. American National Red Cross 1917-1918) the last eight mounted as worn, together with small B.R.C.S. enamelled medallion (H. L. Fitzpatrick No. 4366), unless otherwise described, good very fine and rare (12) £600-800

Herbert Lindsay FitzPatrick was born on 2 December 1868. He served as Controller-General of administration and finally Secretary-General, Egyptian Ministry of Finance, retired 1924. During the Great War he served under the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross and Order of St John, 1914-19; as Director with the Dardanelles Expeditionary Force, September to December 1915; and as Commissioner with the Salonika Forces, 1916-19; he held the rank of Hon. Major from 1916, and Lieutenant-Colonel from 1917 (despatches four times, C.B.E., Knight of Grace of St John of Jerusalem). He also held several foreign orders and decorations including: Officer of the Legion of Honour and Croix de Guerre of France; Grand Officer Order of the Nile of Egypt; Commander of the Serbian Orders of White Eagle (with swords) and St Sava; Commander of Redeemer and Croix de Guerre of Greece; Commander of Prince Danilo of Montenegro, etc. He died on 16 January 1949.
