John Weir was born in Ballynure and enlisted in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. Serving with the 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, he was killed in action on 1 July 1916 - the First Day of the Battle of the Somme. He was buried in the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France.
