David Stiell was born at Lesmahagow, Scotland, on 20 April 1865, and qualified as M.B. at Glasgow in 1886, and as M.D. in 1896. He was appointed Surgeon in February 1887 and became Major in February 1899. He served in South Africa 1900-02, and took part in the operations in the Orange Free State, February to May 1900; in the Transvaal in May to June 1900; in the Transvaal, east and west of Pretoria July to 29 November 1900, including action at Zillikat’s Nek; also in Cape Colony, north and south of the Orange River in 1900; again in the Transvaal 30 November 1900 to 31 May 1902 (Queen’s medal with three clasps, King’s medal with two clasps). He went on retired pay in May 1907, and was recalled to the active list from the reserve of officers on 6 August 1914, but does not appear to have gone overseas.
