Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State (Lt. Colonel R. W. Barnes, R.A.M.C.) good very fine £180-220

Raglan Wykeham Barnes was born at Aylesford on 29 September 1854, and was appointed Surgeon on 6 March 1880. He served in the Nile Expedition of 1898, including the battle of Khartoum (Despatches London Gazette 30 September 1898; Queen’s medal; Egyptian medal with clasp). He served in South Africa in 1899-1900, was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in March 1900, and granted local rank of Colonel when in charge of a General Hospital in South Africa, 8 June 1900. He went on retired pay in November 1900, and was employed when on the Retired List at Dorchester, where he died on 6 September 1914.
