Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Kandahar (Maj. W. S. Seton, 4 Bo. N.I.) minor contact marks, very fine £300-350

William Samuel Seton was born on 22 May 1837, the second son of Sir William Coote Seton, 7th Baronet of Pitmedden. He served in the Persian Expeditionary Force, 1856-57, as a Midshipman in the Indian Navy, and was present at the landing at Hallilah Bay, the capture of Bushire and the bombardment of Mohumrah (Medal and clasp). Nominated to the Bombay Army whilst still serving in the Indian Navy, he was appointed Ensign in the 2nd Bombay European Regiment on 20 July 1857 and Lieutenant on 2 June 1860. Transferred to the Bombay Staff Corps in 1863, he was appointed Adjutant of the 4th Bombay Native Infantry, November 1864-August 1869 and was promoted to Captain on 20 July 1869 and Major on 20 July 1877. He served in the Afghan War of 1878-80, being present at the defence of Kandahar and the battle of 1 September (Medal and clasp). He was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel on 20 July 1883 and Colonel on 20 July 1887, and was appointed A.A.G. Poona Division and District Staff Officer, July 1885-July 1890.

In 1884 he succeeded his brother as the 9th Baronet. Colonel Seton retired from the Army on 20 July 1895. Returning to Cushnie House, Leochel-Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, he was D.L. and J.P. for Aberdeenshire and died on 5 March 1914.
