Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Ofg. Dy. Sur.-Gl. A. J. Dale, Ind. M. Ser.) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, good very fine £250-300

Alfred James Dale was born on 27 December 1830, and studied at the London Hospital where he qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1852 and L.S.A. in 1853. He gained his commission as a prize at the London Hospital and was gazetted Assistant Surgeon on the Bengal Medical Establishment on 20 October 1853.

He became Surgeon in September 1864, Surgeon Major in July 1873, and Brigade Surgeon in November 1879. He was Officiating Deputy Surgeon General whilst serving as Principal Medical Officer of the Kuram Field Force, from September 1879 to November 1880 (Medal).

He was promoted to Deputy Surgeon General in August 1882, retired in July 1886, and died in London on 24 November 1903.
