Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (Asst. Surgn. A. W. Beveridge, M.D. 78th Highlanders) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, light contact marks, otherwise very fine £400-450

Alexander Watt Beveridge was born at Inzievar, parish of Torryburn, Fifeshire, on 4 June 1835. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Medical Staff on 15 September 1857, and to the 78th Highlanders in November of the same year. He served with the Highlanders in the Indian campaign of 1857-58 and was present with Outram’s force in the Alumbagh, including the repulse of numerous attacks, and operations ending in the final capture of Lucknow (Medal and clasp). With appointments to the Staff and to the Royal Artillery in the interim, he returned to the 78th Highlanders as Surgeon in February 1872, and retired in March 1879. He died at Edinburgh on 9 April 1916.
