Charles James Davenport was born at Oxford on 23 September 1833, and qualified M.D. Edin. in 1854. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Staff in August 1854 and was attached to the 66th Foot in April 1855. He transferred to the 6th Dragoon Guards in August 1856, and served with the Carabineers from the outbreak of the mutiny at Meerut in May 1857 until its close in 1859, and was in medical charge of the left wing during the Delhi campaign, and present in the action at Budlekeserai, siege and capture of Delhi, and subsequent operations under Brigadier Showers. Was in charge of regimental head quarters in General Penny’s column, and in the Rohilcund campaign, including the action at Kukrowlie and recapture of Bareilly.

He also served in the Oude campaign of 1858-59 and was present at the actions of Pusgaon, Russoolpore, Biswa, Allipore, and Mehudi, and took part in the campaign in Rajpootana and Central India in pursuit of Tantia Topee and Ferozeshah (Medal and clasp).
