James William Fleming was born at Millstreet, Co. Cork, on 22 February 1822, and qualified F.R.C.S. Edin. in 1855. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the 70th Foot in October 1846 and transferred to the 37th Foot the following month, with whom he served in Ceylon during the rebellion of 1848. He became Surgeon in July 1855, but then underwent further medical studies at Edinburgh. He rejoined the 37th Foot in October 1857 and saw service in the West and North-West Provinces of Bengal during the mutiny of 1857-58 (Medal). He transferred to the 4th Dragoon Guards in February 1866, becoming Surgeon Major in October of that year, and retired in April 1869. He died at Brighton on 25 June 1876.
