China 1842 (G. S. Mann, Asst. Surgeon, 1st Reg. Bengal Volunteers) fitted with original suspension, this loose, otherwise very fine £500-550

George Smyth Mann was born on 24 December 1816, and qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1839. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Bengal Medical Establishment on 22 August 1839, becoming Surgeon in September 1853, and Surgeon Major in August 1859, in which same year he was appointed F.R.C.S. He served with the Bengal Volunteer Regiment in China in the years 1840 and 1841 (Medal). He next served with the 28th Native Infantry at the operations in the Raneezaie Valley, with the Field Force under Sir Colin Campbell in 1852 (Medal with clasp); and also as Field Surgeon to the Eusuffzaie Expedition of 1858, under Major-General Sir Sidney Cotton (despatches
Calcutta Gazette 16 June 1858, medal). He became Deputy Inspector General in March 1864 but died at Dakka on 31 October in the same year.
