William Morpeth was commissioned Quartermaster of the 5th Battalion Durham Rifle Volunteers on 6 November 1886 and granted the rank of Honorary Captain of the 5th Volunteer Battalion D.L.I. on 16 January 1892. He resigned his commission on 19 March 1892 and was awarded the Volunteer L.S. Medal by Army Order October 1902.
