Royal Scottish Academy, a bronze award medal by B. Wyon after J.N. Paton, Genius kneeling, supporting Pegasus and naked flame on platform, rev. laurel branch on tripod, edge named (Robert Ranald McIan, Elected Associate mdccclii), 68mm (BHM 1884; E 1323; Brodie 585; cf. DNW 62, 1527). Extremely fine and attractively patinated; in maroon case of issue [this somewhat distressed] (£80-100)

Plate II. Robert Ranald McIan (1803-56) gave up a career on the stage to paint Scottish history and legends. He had a studio in London and in Fort William, where he painted figures in Highland costume in both oil and watercolour. He illustrated the clans of the Scottish Highlands, which became recognised as his best work
