Parks and Gardens, Scarborough, Cliff Bridge, an engraved silver pass, view of the bridge, erected in the year 1827 below, rev. named (John Cattley Esqr, London, No.56, Not Transferable), 37mm, 9.87g. Very fine and extremely rare (£200-300)

The New Bridge, or Cliff Bridge, 414 feet in length, spans the Ramsdale valley and leads from St Nicholas’ Cliff to the town’s spa. It was engineered by John Outhet at a cost of about £9,000. The foundation stone was laid in 1826 and the bridge opened to the public the following year; the bridge toll was a halfpenny. Sold with further information including two pictures of the bridge.

John Cattley (1759-1830), b. Kippax and christened at Bramham, married Ann Cattley (b. 1759), his cousin, in Kippax in 1785. With his brother Stephen he traded as John & Stephen Cattley, importers of Russian tallow and barilla at Queenhithe, London. A member of Lloyds who owned houses in both London and Barnet, both he and his wife are buried at St John’s, Chipping Barnet, as is their son William Cattley (1788-1835)
