Victoria (1837-1901), 1861, dies Fd, in bronze on a heavy flan, lc wyon below truncation, leaf midribs raised, rev. lcw below shield, edge plain, 11.32g/12h (Gouby W; F 23 [dies 4+D; Sale, lot 16]; Adams 217; BMC 1640). Brilliant and toned with wonderful reflective cameo surfaces, extremely rare; believed only eight known specimens (£800-1,000)

Struck in January 1861 as part of an experiment to determine whether the weight standard of the new bronze coins should be altered to in order to coin 40 instead of 48 pieces to the pound avoirdupois
