A mid-18th century Indian silver casket taken from Tipu Sultan’s Palace at Seringapatam in 1799

Octagonal design, with domed lid, both embellished with chased Indian floral decoration, the base bearing an engraved maker’s mark, length at base 12cm., width at base 8.7cm. and height approx. 8.2cm., in good overall condition; together with a cast, open-worked, oval-shaped decorative fitting, the centre bearing a fish surmounted by a crown, 6.8cm. x 9.3cm., pierced at centre of fish (2) £6,000-8,000

In 1970, the author Denys Forrest recorded, among other known artefacts, as the property of Sir David Baird, Bt., of Senwick, Kirkcudbright, a ‘Silver box containing one of Tipu’s Turban ornaments’.
