An unusual Second World War B.E.M. group of four awarded to 2nd Lieutenant S. G. Cobban, Royal Engineers, who was deocrated for his services as “Garrision Engineer” at the port of Ostend 1944-45

B.E.M. London Gazette 24 January 1946. The original recommendation states:

‘For outstanding devotion to duty in Ostend Port and Town from 13 September 1944, ten days before the port opened, to 5 May 1945. Abnormal responsibilities successfully discharged. For 4 months, in November-December 1944 and from February to May 1945, carrying out the duties of an Officer most efficiently, i.e. acting as Garrison Engineer.

For the whole period in which Ostend has been occupied by Allied troops this N.C.O. has been directly connected with the major portion of Works Services carried out. His services were given with untiring enthusiasm and his share in the different works contributed to the successful execution of undertakings of vital importance to operations. This N.C.O’s. service has been one of continuous devotion to duty, and a selfless and unsparing effort’.

Staff Sergeant Stephen Gordon Cobban was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1945 and was transferred to the Reserve in 1947.
