Desmond Kildare Fitzgerald was born on 13 November 1919 and was educated at Dulwich College and Sandhurst. On leaving Sandhurst he was gazetted to the Border Regiment on 1 July 1939, joining the 1st Battalion at Aldershot. He went to France in September and was given command of a carrier platoon. He was stationed for a time near Lille, and also served in the Maginot Line and the Saar during January 1940. He was involved in the heavy fighting when the Germans advanced through Belgium and was killed in action, leading a counter-attack, at Froyennes-lez-Tournai on 21 May 1940. He was buried in Froyennes Communal Cemetery. Sold with copied research.
