Charles William Rainbird was born in Crewkerne, Somerset and living in Lewes, Sussex, enlisted at Chichester. He served originally as Private 1050 in the Royal Sussex Regiment before being transferred to the 1st Garrison Battalion Essex Regiment. He died in Egypt on 20 July 1917 and was buried in the Khartoum War Cemetery.
