John Henderson was born in Lauder in Berwickshire. A telegraphist by occupation and a member of the 1st Vol. Battalion K.O.S.B., he attested for the Highland Light Infantry on 10 November 1894, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in Malta, February 1895-September 1898, in the occupation of Crete, September-December 1898 and in South Africa, January 1900- November 1902. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1902 and discharged in November 1906.

Sold with a photograph of the recipient in uniform, c.1894; part of the box of issue for the King’s South Africa - bearing his name, rank and unit etc.; a post card of a view of the village of Lauder; eleven card pages from the recipient’s photograph album to which are affixed original sepia photographs relating to his military career - mainly Crete and South Africa. Also with copied service papers.
