Army Meritorious Service Medal, E.VII.R. (Q.M. Serjt. J. Greaney, 1st 14 Foot) nearly extremely fine £200-250

Quarter Master Serjeant John Greaney was Office Keeper of the District Offices at Dublin Castle when recommended for his M.S.M. by the G.O.C. Ireland in May 1902. It was noted that “when Sergeant of the Dalhousie Depot in India in September 1885 was noted for the Medal and annuity from the Government of India. In reply to a reference to him the C-in-C. India stated that there was no immediate prospect of the grant of the annuity and medal from India.” Greaney was discharged in 1876 after 22 years of service, with 18 of them overseas and was awarded the Crimea Medal with clasp for Sebastopol and Turkish Crimea Medal. A further note on his papers states, “F.M. Commanding the Forces in Ireland informed on 23 July, 1902 that as this N.C.O. served with credit in the Crimea and distinguished himself in the trenches his name has been placed on the list of candidates’ records in this Department but should he be granted an annuity by the Government of India his name would be removed from the War Office List.” Greaney was awarded the M.S.M. on 1 April 1904 with an annuity of £10. He died on 2 November 1914. (Ref. McInnes, The Annuity Meritorious Service Medal 1847-1953 (and Supplement)).
