Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (2606 Qr. Mr. Sergt. G. B. Freeman, 87th Regt.), slightly later issue, good very fine £160-200

George Badkin Freeman was born in Clifton, Stafford on 2 May 1823. He enlisted into the Coldstream Guards in September 1844 and in December 1847 was promoted Corporal. In January 1849 he transferred to the 87th Regiment as Paymaster Sergeant, becoming Quartermaster Sergeant in March 1850 and Quartermaster in February 1861. Freeman served in the East Indies, August 1849-May 1860; China, May 1860-November 1861 and then again in India. With the regiment he served in the Indian Mutiny for which he was awarded the medal without clasp but does not appear to have been entitled to a China Medal for his service in that country. He exchanged to the 97th Regiment with the rank of Quartermaster in October 1862. Shown in published rolls with a regimental number variously 2666 or 2636. Sold with copied service papers.
