Ex W. E. Gray Collection 1898.

Thomas Edwin Kelly joined the Army as an Ensign on 1 April 1806, in which regiment is not certain but he served with it in the expedition to Copenhagen in 1807. He was appointed Lieutenant in the 13th Foot on 11 February 1808 and served with that regiment in the West Indies, at the capture of Martinique in 1809, and Guadaloupe in 1810. Also in the campaigns of 1813, 1814, and 1815, in Lower Canada, including the actions at La Cole Mill and Plattsburg.

His subsequent promotions were to Captain in December 1822, to Major in February 1837, to Lieutenant-Colonel in May 1841, and to Colonel in November 1851. In 1854 Kelly was in command of a Provisional Battalion at Chatham Garrison, and was shortly afterwards appointed Inspecting Field Officer in London, and Superintendent of the Recruiting Department in the Adjutant General’s Department. Colonel Kelly died during 1858.
