William Robert Parsons was born on 7 October 1863, and enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Farnborough on 7 October 1882, aged 19. He embarked for India on the Jumna on 18 October 1886, and transferred to the Bengal Unattached List at Lucknow in June 1892, as a Corporal in the Commissariat Department, with whom he saw service during the Chin Hills operations of 1892-93. He was promoted to Sub-Conductor in October 1901, and was remanded back to the Royal Artillery on 1 December 1902.
